Frankfurts Museumsufer

A building ensemble of renowned museums and art houses, unique in Europe, gathers around the beautiful banks of the Main River in Frankfurt. But how did this artistic conglomeration come into being?

Plane trees and majestic Wilhelminian villas with spacious gardens line the Schaumainkai - the Sachsenhausen bank of the Main. The opposite bank of the river, the Mainkai, is bordered by the city center. This is where a high density of internationally important exhibition venues are located. Prominent examples are the Städel, the German Architecture Museum and the Schirn Kunsthalle.

This cultural bridge-building has a long tradition: the concept of the museum embankment goes back to the former Head of Cultural Affairs Hilmar Hoffmann. He developed the idea in 1978 together with the mayor at the time, Walter Wallmann. "Culture for all" was to be created on both sides of the Main. Existing museums were extended and expanded, new museums moved into new buildings and the patrician villas on Schaumainkai. There are also over 35 exciting galleries to discover in Frankfurt.
