Institut für Stadtgeschichte

The Institute for Urban History is one of the most important municipal archives in Germany and one of the city's oldest cultural institutions. It has been preserving Frankfurt's historical heritage since 1436 and presents aspects of the city's history in changing exhibitions as well as in lectures, guided tours and other event formats. Those interested in history and researchers can view files, documents, maps, plans and cityscapes in the reading room. The institute is located in the Carmelite monastery, Frankfurt's only preserved medieval monastery complex, decorated with Jörg Ratgeb's pre-baroque murals.
