Zoo Frankfurt
The Frankfurt Zoo was opened as early as 1858 and is considered the second oldest zoo in Germany after the Berlin Zoological Garden. Today, it houses around 4800 animals of over 400 species on a total area of eleven hectares - and that in the middle of the city center. In addition to large outdoor enclosures, where lions, tigers, flamingos and tree kangaroos cavort, there are also several animal houses. Highlights include the great ape house and the Grzimek House, with a large dark area for nocturnal animals. The zoo's work focuses on species and nature conservation, which is why it cooperates intensively with the Frankfurt Zoological Society (ZGF), a conservation organization that is active worldwide. The entrance is formed by the Zoo Society House, where Frankfurt's first children's and youth theater is to be built in the coming years.
