Römerberg
Römerberg is located in the center of Frankfurt's old town, its distinctive silhouette is world famous. In the house "Zum Römer" the city council has had its seat since the 15th century, hence the name of the square. It was the scene of fairs, markets and tournaments, but also of imperial elections and coronations. The center is formed by the Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen, Frankfurt's first fountain, which is crowned by a Justizia with scales and a sword. The eastern part with the imposing row of houses is also called Samstagsberg. Today's appearance is the result of reconstructions true to the original as well as new buildings from the 50s and 80s. The historic buildings were largely destroyed in air raids during the Second World War. The Old Nikolai Church and the Historical Museum are located on the south side.
