Alte Nikolaikirche
The Old Nikolai Church is located on the south side of the Römerberg and, with its origins in the 11th/12th century, is considered the oldest Protestant parish church in the city. The patron saint of this Gothic building is St. Nicholas, patron saint of fishermen. He was probably supposed to protect against the frequent floods of the Main River, near which the church is located. The church was probably built in three phases. Over the centuries, it was closed several times and converted into a storage room or served as a garrison church. Since 1949 it has been used as a place of worship by the Evangelical Paulsgemeinde. In 1989-92 a comprehensive renovation took place. Among other things, a cellar was dug and a movable altar and a new organ were built.
