With a population of over 100,000, Hanau has now grown into a major city, making it the sixth largest city in Hesse. The city is part of the Frankfurt metropolitan area, which is organized in the FrankfurtRhineMain Regional Association. Since 2006, Hanau has borne the official additional designation of Brothers Grimm City, as they were born in the city and spent their early years here. The GrimmsMärchenReich hands-on museum is also dedicated to them. Other sights include Philippsruhe Castle and the historic Wilhelmsbad spa complex.
