Europäische Zentralbank
With the European Central Bank, ECB for short, the central bank of the European Monetary Union has had its headquarters in Frankfurt since its founding in 1998. Initially housed in the EuroTower in the city center, it has been at home in the Ostend district since 2014 - where Frankfurt's wholesale market hall once stood. The 184-meter-high new building was integrated into this. Guided tours are available free of charge on site, enabling interested parties to learn more about the role and tasks of the ECB. At the same time, the ECB is also a place of remembrance, because the history of the Grossmarkthalle also includes a very dark chapter: from 1941 to 1945, Jewish citizens were locked up in the eastern part of the building and then deported.
