Of Schauerleuten, Sandkindern & Abtrittfrauen - crafts & professions in old Frankfurt
On our leisurely tour of the town, we visit historical places to find people and their professions that no longer exist. These include towboat riders, sand and scrub men, women who used to work on the steps and night watchmen, carpenters and journeymen millers and, of course, boiler heaters. This exciting & entertaining guided tour aims to remind us of the ancient professions from the distant past that no longer existed even for our grandparents... Today, the Osthafen is one of the ten largest inland ports in Germany. In the past, the old port was located along the harbor wall directly on the Main, where the old town is located today. Downstream on the Main, it was easy for traders and skippers to simply drift along with the water. Upstream on the Main it was no longer so easy, because there was no motorized drive and so the whole thing had to be pulled by horse and rider for long stretches. The riders were the so-called "Treidelreiter", who pulled the barges and ships up to Frankfurt with their worn-out barge riders. A tough job for animals and humans. In old age, the horse only knew the horse butcher and that was certainly no pony farm. And who actually loaded and unloaded the hundreds of barges that landed in Frankfurt every day? If you look into the parlors of former patrician houses and the rich houses of Frankfurt's merchants, you would turn green with envy. So much wealth and luxury in one place. But today's reconstructions hide the fact that cleanliness didn't always come naturally, that people had their own people who were responsible for flashing and blinking. If you had a stone floor or parquet flooring, there were far too many cracks for dust to get caught in. How to clean them? The best solution was quickly found: The finest sand, created by children and their parents in painstaking, hours-long work by hewing sandstones on top of each other. Dust lungs and broken wrists included, but a sparkling clean room instead. There were many trades and professions that we want to take a closer look at on this leisurely tour of Frankfurt's old town. The tour starts at the Goethehaus and follows the old street routes in the Rosental down to the Main, via the Römer to the New Old Town. Join your guide Sascha Ruehlow on an interesting tour of the city to discover the professions that you are very lucky not to have worked in...
